I’m posting this for the sole purpose of forcing myself to edit it.

EXT. HOME SWEET HOME – ONE BRIGHT SHINY DAY

The neighborhood is a grid of small lots with small houses built several decades ago. No two homes are the same, nearly all of them having been remodeled over the years.

Two small moving vans park nose to nose in front of the most recently painted house on the block.

MERCER GREENE (30) steps out of the van on the left. He’s wearing a tuxedo.

LISA GREENE (30) steps out of the van on the right. She makes sure not to close the door on the hem of her wedding dress.

The couple hold hands as they approach their new home. Mercer takes her into his arms and carries her across the threshold.

INT. HOME SWEET HOME – BRIGHT SHINY DAYS GALORE

A SERIES:

Lisa, wearing ratty old clothes and painting the dining room a soft gray-blue. Mercer and MASON GREENE (older, balder, muscular) bring a mattress through the door. Lisa points them to the bedroom.

Lisa is painting the kitchen yellow. The boys bring in boxes marked “LISA”. She directs them to the dining room.

Lisa is hanging art. The boys bring in boxes marked “MERCER”. She sends them to the spare room.

Lisa is trying to decide if she has enough energy to do any more. Through the door, Mason carries Mercer like a sack of potatoes. Mason tosses his brother to the floor in the middle of the living room, kisses his new sister-in-law’s cheek, and exits.

On the living room floor, Mercer rolls himself over and sits up to find Lisa handing him a microwaved box dinner. They sit together in front of a laptop with SUPERNATURAL cued on the screen. Before Mercer can dig in, Lisa hands him a blunt fit for a gangster.

He kisses her, and they forget everything else.

INT. MATTRESS WAREHOUSE – DAY

A metal and concrete warehouse full of plastic-covered mattresses organized by size and color.

Mercer, wearing a back brace, hoists a mattress onto his shoulder. He carries it to the loading bay where a truck is waiting.

As he drops it into place, a hand taps him on the shoulder. He turns to find STEWART NEWMAN (50) in a jacket reading “MANAGER” where a name tag should be. Stewart beckons Mercer to follow.

Mercer takes off his back brace and tucks in his polo shirt as he follows Stewart out of the warehouse and into the mattress store.

INT. MATTRESS STORE – CONTINOUS

Stewart introduces Mercer to COUPLE 1 who appear to be in need of a good night’s sleep. Mercer shows them the nearest model, and they nod enthusiastically. Couple 1 hand him a wad of cash, shake his hand, and go.

Mercer turns and fans himself with the money.

Stewart takes off his jacket as Mercer drops the wad onto the desk. Stew hands the jacket to Mercer, and then he dons another in its place. Instead of “MANAGER,” this new jacket reads, “CORPORATE.”

Stewart shakes Mercer’s hand with a smile before exiting. Mercer puts on the manager’s jacket.

It fits.

INT. COFFEE SHOP – DAY

Lisa’s shift is over. She waves goodbye to her coworkers and takes off her apron. She drops it on the counter and picks up a long black robe instead.

As she makes her way to the door, she puts on the robe.

She steps through the door and onto a stage.

INT. AUDITORIUM STAGE – CONTINUOUS

She puts the graduation cap in place with tassel on the right. She steps confidently to the podium and takes THE DEAN’s hand, accepting her diploma with a smile and an appreciative nod to the crowd.

She moves the tassel to the left as she exits the stage and into

INT. OFFICE BUILDING LOBBY – CONTINUOUS

She takes off her graduation robe, and underneath is wearing professional garb. She drops the robe, brushes her hands clean, and heads for the elevator bay just ahead. Someone is kind enough to hold the door for her.

The she realizes she is still wearing her cap and tosses it into the lobby as the elevator doors close.

INT. CUBICLE HELL – CONTINUOUS

The elevator doors open, and Lisa exits. She is looking out over a sea of cubicles. She sees a sign in the middle of the room. It’s a big glowing ARROW pointing down. The sign reads “LISA.”

She’s overwhelmed, but she accepts her fate.

EXT. HOME SWEET HOME – DAY

A box truck labeled “NEW FURNITURE” arrives in front of the house.

Lisa and Mercer stand in the doorway looking just like grown-ups.

Lisa rushes to direct the delivery crew. Mercer props open the door.

INT. HOME SWEET HOME – BEDROOM – NIGHT

The newly furnished bedroom is mid-century modern cozy. The couple share a king size bed, their pillows propped against the headboard as they browse on their tablets.

Mercer elbows Lisa to show her what he’s laughing at.

ON TABLET SCREEN

A meme shows a father teaching his son how to catch. The caption reads, “Kids are like pets, but the tricks are better.”

BACK TO SCENE

Lisa shakes her head. She shows him what she’s been awwing at.

ON TABLET SCREEN

The cutest little puppy on the whole freaking planet.

BACK TO SCENE

Mercer shakes his head and points to his tablet. Lisa shakes her head and points to hers.

They both sigh, put their devices on their nightstands, and turn out the lights.

INT. HOME SWEET HOME – DINING ROOM – DINNER TIME

The table is mid-century modern to match the bedroom. Lisa has a definite style, no doubt.

The couple sits across from one another sharing a home-cooked meal. Love is in the air.

INT. HOME SWEET HOME – AFTERNOON

Mercer is on the couch. In the b.g. there are Christmas decorations twinkling.

Lisa comes in carrying a strange bag. She sets in on the coffee table and pulls out two KITTENS, one grey and one black.

Mercer is dumbfounded, but damn if they aren’t adorable. The black one curls up in the crook of his arm and immediately falls asleep.

INT. HOME SWEET HOME – NIGHT

IN SERIES:

The couple and kittens curl up together, watching TV and passing a colorful glass bong. The b.g. decorations call it Valentine’s day.

Lisa holds the grey cat, Mercer the black. They’re still watching TV. The b.g. decorations name it Easter.

The couple eats box dinners staring at the boob-tube. They’re gaining weight for July 4th.

Mercer’s asleep with the TV on. Lisa turns it off and goes to bed without him. Happy Thanksgiving.

INT. HOME SWEET HOME – AFTERNOON

Lisa asleep on the couch. Mercer wakes her up by laying a tiny PUPPY on her chest. It’s a lovable Rotty mutt. Lisa is elated.

For a moment.

The mutt starts to whine, so she hands it back to Mercer. He produces a leash from his pocket and attaches it to the dog’s collar.

He exits as a cat jumps into Lisa’s lap. She loves her cats more.

INT. HOME SWEET HOME – DAY

The decorations say Easter again. Mercer pushes a bicycle through the door with a taller, exhausted puppy trailing behind him.

Lisa greets him with a grim expression. She hands him a pregnancy test.

His face brightens, and he hugs her. She’s stiff. He notices.

She shakes her head. He’s crushed.

EXT. CLINIC – DAY

Mercer in the front seat of an ancient Buick, an ever-growing puppy in the back. Mercer’s eyes are distant.

Lisa opens the passenger door and gets in. They share a look. She nods. She cannot hide her smile of relief.

Mercer sighs.

INT. HOME SWEET HOME – AFTERNOON

The 4th of July. Lisa is dressed up for a night on the town. She has lost weight and looks good.

Mercer is on the couch in slob chic. He isn’t going anywhere.

Lisa tries to give Mercer a hug. He pulls away and shakes his head. He cannot look her in the eye.

After she leaves, he puts the leash on his puppy monster.

He exits, turning out the lights.

SERIES OF CLOSE UPS

Gaudily framed family photos. Great-Granny. Grampa. Mom. Daughter. No father needed.

A ripped signed Aerosmith poster tacked to the wall.

A refrigerator covered in kindergarten art and holiday cards.

A pink wall covered with crayon doodles.

Dolphin tchotchkes littering an entertainment center.

An ashtray full of butts on a fingerprint-smeared glass coffee table.

INT. CAROLINE’S TRAILER – LIVING ROOM – NIGHT

Light from the kitchen casts shadows.

On the sofa sits DAVID (20s), bare-chested. Rigid spine. Knees bouncing another hole in his jeans. He bites his thumb nail.

Eyes flick to a DOLPHIN CLOCK.

11:30.

David huffs and stands. Three steps to cross the room, fingers separating the blinds so he can see

Nothing. There’s nothing to see. He drops his hand, shaking his head. He turns toward the hall.

INT. CAROLINE’S TRAILER – HALLWAY – NIGHT

Quiet steps leading to soft pink LIGHT spilling from a doorway.

INT. CAROLINE’S TRAILER – APRIL’S ROOM – NIGHT

David peeks into the room to find APRIL (6) softly snoring, clutching a stuffed animal.

He pulls the door nearly shut.

INT. CAROLINE’S TRAILER – KITCHEN – NIGHT

11:47 reads the clock on the stove.

David leans against the counter, distracting himself with his phone.

11:48.

He trades his phone for a pack of cigarettes. He lights one while checking the scene through the window.

EXT. CAROLINE’S DRIVEWAY – NIGHT

A clean white pickup pulls in fast, headlights bright and clear, LEDs flashing purple to green along the undercarriage.

BASS thumps.

INT. CAROLINE’S TRAILER – KITCHEN – NIGHT

11:52.

David watches through the window. Takes a relieved drag from his cigarette.

EXT. CAROLINE’S DRIVEWAY – NIGHT

The truck’s passenger door opens.

Electronic MUSIC spilling into the night. GIGGLING follows.

                    CAROLINE

          Okay!

               (more giggles)

          Oh my GOD, STOP!

               (a delighted squeal)

One long, bare leg is joined by another. The giggles introduce us to CAROLINE (20s) as she finally manages to pull herself out of the truck. She’s dolled up in country chic. Blonde hair high with product. Tank top showing bra straps. Short skirt.

She’s carrying her shoes with her small purse.

CAROLINE

          Okay, Weirdo!

She SLAMS the truck door.

HONK

She slaps the hood of the truck as she stumbles past it.

Dogs BAY at the hubbub.

                    CAROLINE

          SHHH!

               (laughing)

          Asshole!

She tiptoes her way through the grass to her trailer, fumbling through her purse.

INT. CAROLINE’S TRAILER – KITCHEN – NIGHT

11:59 on the clock.

A smoldering cigarette butt in the ashtray on the counter.

INT. CAROLINE’S TRAILER – BEDROOM – NIGHT

David, in bed, pulls the sheet over his jeans.

Caroline makes a RACKET opening the front door.

David reaches for the lamp on the nightstand and turns it off.
